Is it really all about you?
Is your on line presence all about you? Though we are all fascinating creatures with a wealth of interests blah, blah, blah, the point is that yes, we are ALL interesting in one way or another but is that what people are looking for in their on-line searches?
I don’t think so.
People want information that means something to THEM. Start each day’s posting with “Why would anyone care about this?” Once you answer this simple question your writing topics move from the me, me, me to the you, you, you. I think there is a song lyric in here somewhere but I’m no Paul McCartney. Bring value to your on-line presence by focusing outside yourself. What’s the benefit? Here’s what’s in it for you, my hopefully interested reader.

Great advice.
There’s a school of advertising this observation butts up against called “We’re here” advertising. Basically, it tells people what a company does but not why consumers should buy from them. It lacks a well explained user benefit. “Me, me, me” and “We’re here” efforts are lazy and turn people off. Trackin’ it up!
Why do salesmen talk about themselves – no one cares. A customer – buyer – client – is primarily interested in themselves. Advertising, blogs, tweets that talk about YOU miss the target because the THEM are only interested in themselves. Talk to them about them and you have a message … otherwise your just talking about yourself … who cares.
It’s all about appropriate balance. The best salespeople I know are best listeners. Empathy is the skill I look for when being sold to and is what I focus upon in preparing to speak to a potential client.
